For as long as I can remember I have had the desire to help people. I had my own visions of how this would come to pass but I never expected God to unveil His plan the way He has tonight. Well, if I do say so myself, tonight was AWESOME!
I have been trying to find ways to earn some extra $$ so I answered an ad on Craigslist. It was for some side accounting work for a non-profit in Portland. I talked on the phone with the “Main Guy” and one of his board members. We probably talked for 45 minutes or so. I was intrigued by their enthusiasm for the mission. Helping kids through music and education!
We set up a meeting time for me to come over there and take a look at what their business needed as far as accounting. Cool.. I was imagining meeting them at an older business complex, not modern, maybe a little dingy – whatever; Well, I went there tonight.
I find out on my way, that I am actually going to a house, not an office – first red flag! So I confidently proceeded to the wrong house – of course I didn’t know it was the wrong house at first and I thought to myself, this is a nice place! Knocked, rang, waited and no one answered. Then I saw the house #’s and realized I was a house over from my destination.
Ummmmm, I got to my actual destination and quite honestly, I was a little hesitant to go in. It was, to say the least, unique! From deer antlers to blue and yellow painted sidewalks and the many green plants surrounding me, I did feel a smidgen out of place. I got to the front door and the “Main Guy” answered and invited me in. He had a cool dog which may have been part of the reason I went in the door!
Anyways after the very unnerving moment of being escorted to the basement (second and largest red flag EVER), I started to see the enthusiasm I had heard on the phone nights before. I received 45 minute historical play by play about how the life of the “Main Guy” had been interconnected with the lives of others who would eventually lead him to start this AMAZING foundation. We went from the 70’s to 2018 and beyond!
This man and his team appear to be putting 100% of everything into helping youth in their, and others communities. Who knows how far it will grow!! Good things like this generally have a way of taking off right? I am so grateful right now to have met this person.
Instead of my grandiose plans of “helping people”, I was led to the basement of a strange man I had never met to find a place where my own life experiences and my work skills can be of help. The funny thing is I don’t even know if they are going to hire me!!! That’s not even on my mind at this point. I just want to be a part of what is happening and hopefully help some kids. Thank you Lord for being so creative and allowing me to do your work.
